1997-2001: BA in Clinical and Social Sciences in Psychology
Dr. Grandner completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Rochester, in Rochester, NY. His studies focused primarily in psychology, but he also explored course clusters in both philosophy and neuroscience. During his third and fourth years, he worked in the Sleep and Neurophysiology Research Laboratory under Dr. Donna Giles and Dr. Michael Perlis. He completed 2 independent study courses and an honors thesis in that lab. He guaduated Cum Laude with High Honors for Research in Psychology. |

2001-2005: MS in Clinical Psychology
Immediately after completing his undergraduate degree, he began graduate training at the San Diego State University / University of California, San Diego Joint Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology. This is one of the most highly rated research-based Ph.D. programs in Clinical Psychology in the nation. He received his Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology in January, 2005 from San Diego State University. During his second year, he also completed the clinical practicum located at the SDSU psychology clinic.

2001-2007: PhD in Clinical Psychology
Dr. Grandner completed his graduate training at the San Diego State University / University of California, San Diego Joint Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology. While most of the coursework was completed at San Diego State University (SDSU), the majority of the research and clinical activities took place at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). He also completed clinical practica on the locked inpatient unit at the UCSD medical center (third year) and sleep medicine clinics at the UCSD medical center and San Diego VA hospital (4th year). He worked as a research assistant for Dr. Sonia Ancoli-Israel at the J. Christian Gillin Sleep and Chronobiology Laboratory at UCSD and collaborated with Dr. Sean Drummond at the Laboratory for Sleep and Behavioral Neuroscience at UCSD. The majority of his research training was under Dr. Daniel Kripke, along with Dr. Shawn Youngstedt, Dr. Jeffrey Elliott, Dr. Richard Loving, Dr. In-Young Yoon, and collaborator Dr. Roger Cole at the Circadian Pacemaker Laboratory at UCSD, where Dr. Kripke served as graduate advisor and dissertation committee chair. |

2006-2007: Clinical Psychology Internship
Dr. Grandner completed an APA-accredited internship in clinical psychology at the San Diego Veterans Affairs Healthcare System, with a secondary placement at the UCSD outpatient psychiatry services clinic. This internship focused on primary care behavioral medicine and management of difficult cases through individual and group interventions. |

2007-2011: Postdoctoral Fellowships
Dr. Grandner completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Center for Sleep and Circadian Neurobiology at the University of Pennsylvania under the supervision of Dr. Allan Pack. He also completed an AASM-accredited Behavioral Sleep Medicine fellowship, under the training of Dr. Phil Gehrman and Dr. Jodi Mindell. This fellowship included clinical training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, the Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia |

2014: Board Certification in Behavioral Sleep Medicine
Dr. Grandner passed the exam administered by the American Board of Sleep Medicine to earn the cerdential of being Certified in Behavioral Sleep Medicine (CBSM). He was one of only 213 individuals worldwide to receive this credential. |

2014: Masters in Translational Research
Dr. Grandner received a fellowship award from the Institute for Translational Medicine and Therapeutics to complete the Masters in Translational Research Program at Penn. The MTR program consisted of coure courses in conduct of research and disease measurement, laboratory rotations focused on cardiometabolic assessment (supervised by Dr. Raymond Townsend, Dr. Stephen Master, and Dr. Muredach Reilly), and elective courses that addressed issues related to behavioral health interventions (led by Dr. Robert Schnoll), the study of race in biomedical research (led by Dr. Dorothy Roberts), and cardiovascular physiology (led by Dr. Vladimir Muzykantov and Dr. Tilo Grosser). His thesis focused on "Sleep Duration, Pro-Inflammatory Markers, and Metabolic Hormones" and was supervised by Dr. Allan Pack and Dr. Emma Meagher. |

2016: Certificate in Translational Medicine
Dr. Grandner completed a training course by the Eureka Institute for Translational Medicine, supported by the University of Arizona. This course included additional development in areas including intellectual property, partnerships with industry, developing translational curricula, and other areas. |

2018: Diplomate in Behavioral Sleep Medicine
Dr. Grandner was one of the first to receive the designation of Diplomate in Behavioral Sleep Medicine (DBSM) by the newly-formed Board of Behavioral Sleep Medicine. |
